One thing we need to remember when we start working out trying to lose weight is that muscle weighs more than fat, so as our muscles get stronger and grow, the scale might show no progress. People can get frustrated because they don't see their weight going down while in reality they are getting in shape.

Lissy, My sister is 5'6", weighs 170 pounds and is a size 10. I have another sister who is 160 but is a size 14! the difference is in the muscle! When you diet you should definitely take your measurements in addition to weighing yourself. That way even if the scale does not show any pounds lost, you can still see if you are getting any smaller.

I just read in Redbook that this is a myth. Muscle doesn't weight more than fat. It makes you look bulkier than having no muscle and being skinny, but muscle does not weigh more than fat. Muscle weighs more than nothing (skin and bone). Of course if you have muscle you will weigh more than someone who does not, and you will wear a bigger size too (bulkier). |

You are wrong there, KrisNY. Muscle weighs much more than fat. The fat is a loose abstract collection of adipose tissue. It is loose, contains fatty cells + water and occupies a lot of space. In contrast, muscles are pure protein. They are densely packed. They have a lot of water retention. Muscles are welcome (thought not in excess for a woman) because they help increase the metabolic rate and burn glucose.

Yes, muscle tissue is more metabolically active, too, that's why building some muscle is good - it helps the body to burn calories better. Of course, us ladies wouldn't want to go overboard with it.

Exercise of body bills the muscles and makes it strong and hard.but the out look may show you slimmer as the flesh is reduced to muscles.
