Dowries come in various types and forms. Also in various quantities and amounts. And in accordance with your status in life. Could anyone here share what gifts they received as dowries?

My husband is from a culture where a dowry is very important, but we didn't have any money, so he gave me an IOU. When the time is right, he will get me a diamond ring, value of $15,000. He will be happy because he will have satisfied his obligation to pay me the dowry, and I'll be happy with a big huge rock!

Recent days most middle class families avoid asking dowries. Only in very high class and lower class families the system is still proceeding. Some of the sensitive stories behind dowries is pathetic.....

Dowry is illegal. You could end up in Jail.

I personally don't like people taking or giving dowries, i feel it as illegal. Recently we did our brother's marriage without taking dowry, but celebrated it very happily.

I hate dowries...and its illegal..it is not a humanity...marriage is GODs plan. In that we are demanding the money its more like a business.

Either taking or giving dowry is bad. First of all girl's parents should make it a habit of not giving dowry even if they have lots of money. People spend lots of money on their daughter's marriage. So it has become the custom to give dowry. Everybody knows it's illegal. But still people give and still people demand.

There are also many good people who get married without any dowry .

Dowry can be in any form. Cash, House hold things, car, jewellery anything.

Dowries are bad, and it just puts the girls parents under more pressure. I hear and read stories in the news and paper, where girls get thrown out of the house and get beaten up if dowry isn't given and sometimes the dowry thing continues after marriage for more.

The best thing would be to not get your daughter married to someone who takes dowry in the first place.
