Default Time to apply for college

My son is a senoir this year, so he is looking into the colleges that he wants to apply to. I am getting so sad thinking about this. We live in NY and he is looking into colleges in Colorado, Texas and California!!! What is he thinking!!
Of course I am being very supportive and at the same time asking him about the colleges in NY state.
Anyone else have a hard time when their kids went to college?

I don't have kids, but I could imagine. I worry about my little sister (whose like a daughter to me, because I basically raised her) moving away. Do you know why he's chosen those states?

He said it's time for him to get out of this town and see the world I am hoping that he will find something closer to home. He is still researching, but his girlfriend and he are going for the same major, so I fear if she goes far away he will too.

During his HS days, does your son like to party too much, neglect his schoolworks, etc. in short not very responsible? If he is, I think it would be better if he studies somewhere near your place so you could watch over him but if he's a very good student, maybe a little time away from home would do him some good. I'm not saying that "the obvious" would happen but statistics show that it does. It pays to be smart and careful. Until your (hypothetically) irresponsible son changes, I don't think he should be allowed to be too far away from your home. On the other hand, if your son can handle all the peer pressure that might be thrown at him, go ahead, let him. It'll be good for him.

My daughters are a little young for that; however, my ex and I have visited the potential high schools that our daughter might like to go to in two years. We always like to get familiar with this type of stuff in advance. I felt so strange walking down the corridors in those schools though. Even though my daughter is already in 5th grade, I just don't want to picture her growing up - time is going by very fast...
