Question Which SPF sunscreen....

What SPF no. we should use? Is there any specific technique? I have seen marketed products with SPF from 10-35 & have been confused since.

It really depends on your skin. If you burn easy, like my ex did, then you may want something like 50, so you don't get any sun at all. For someone like me, I use about 30, but honestly even 10 would be fine. I would try a few and see what you like best

I heard that SPF factor does not really matter, there is actual no such difference in the SPF factors! Although I do get the highest SPF factor during the summers, as in India the sun is gorging like mad

Few Official Pharmacopoeia & Books suggests following method for type of skin & SPF needed. I use sunscreen with SPF 30 even though my skin fits in Fair type of skin. Try using Ponds sunscreen with SPF 40. It’s quite useful for Indian Summers.

Quote:
Skin Type - Very Fair – This skin type generally burns quickly. Tanning is rare or not common. It is recommended that sunscreen products for this skin type contain SPF 20 to 30.
Skin Type – Fair – This skin type almost always burns easily. Tanning can occur sometimes, but not much. It is recommended that sunscreen products for this skin type contain SPF 12 to 20.
Skin Type – Light – This skin type burns in the moderate range. Tanning is normally gradual, yielding a light brown shade. It is recommended that sunscreen products for this skin type contain SPF 8 to 12.
Skin Type – Medium – This skin type burns infrequently. Tanning happens much of the time, yielding a moderate brown shade. It is recommended that sunscreen products for this skin type contain SPF 4 to 8.
Skin Type – Dark – This skin type rarely burns. Tanning occurs most of time, yielding a dark brown shade. It is recommended that sunscreen products for this skin type contain SPF 2 to 4.

Probably medium .. HmM..... I think I will stick stick with medium

You come to know that a person is of type 1 if she get sunburns quite soon & other types basically follow the trait. Although using highest SPF wouldn't hurt at all, although it may drill a hole in our pocket.

Sunburn occurs due to low melanin formation in sunlight; hence people with fair skin are more prone to sunburns as melanin protects the inner skin from burning.
You can afford to choose sunscreens with higher SPF than required by your skin but not lower one.

There are testing equipments for validating type of skin. I had attended an Amway skin care product demo where they had similar equipment. It not only detected the type of my skin but also the sore spots, pores that could develop into cysts (acne), burnt skin, etc.
p.s they are definitions and not the way to test. :P

If you still have doubts what spf to use, better see a dermatologist and ask what is the best sunscreen for you. SPF depends on the skin type, but there are no immediate if you try different SPF on your skin.
