Default Nursing moms and drinking

I have a neice that says if you have a hard time producing milk you should drink beer. The beer is suppose to help your milk come in.

Does this make sense to anyone? I seem to disbelieve it.

I am sure that that is not true.

Absolutely wrong, advising a lactating mother to have alcohol is strictly not good. Please dont follow it.

Another medical question, will the alcohol show up in the breast milk?

won't it get metabolized before the milk production happens?

I read that it takes one hour after consumption for alcohol to pass from breastmilk. I've never heard of drinking beer. I have heard of something called fenugreek or something like that.

yes it does metabolize but as our body tries to gain some thing from anything you take, it is not advised to consume alcohol. At first few drinks nothing will show up but after some days the difference can be seen in the milk

Certainly no. You were given some wrong information. Doing so will spoil your babies health. Don't try this.

That is exactly what I said. She insists that it is all over the net that it is good for the breast milk. I still haven't seen an article to support this!

I have heard that too but I don't know anyone for whom it actually worked.

well CPS probably won't prosecute her or anything, but just a visit
from a social worker might intimidate her and knock some sense into her.

Beer is not suggested, i don't know why she has advised you this, it is absolutely wrong. Better to have milk daily before feeding your child, eat small fishes they help in milk production, i personally experienced this.

Yes, alcohol shows up in breastmilk. Every body metabolizes it differently (just like 2 people having the same amount of drinks having differnt blood alcohol levels). I have noticed my breasts feeling more engorged after a few beers, but I am always sure to test my milk before nursing again. There are little test strips called MILKSCREEN. I love them! You can find them at Walgreens, they are pretty cheap. $6 for 3 or $15 for 12.

Trinale if you went through a difficult norm delivery vs c- section .... i cannot see why you cannot simply stay of alcohol till you are done breastfeeding

you make it sound as if i am an alcoholic. my son is 7 months old and i have drank on THREE occasions since he was born. i am being a responsible parent by making sure my milk is ok for him to drink after i've had a few drinks.

and i'm not quite sure how not having a c-section comes into play here...
