Default Understanding Post Partum Depression

I don't understand post partum depression. Being pregnant and the expectation of becoming a mother is supposed to be one of the high points in a woman's life, so why would a woman get depressed after she has the child? Could someone explain this to me?

From what I've heard, it has a lot to do with a change in hormone levels. Pregnancy is the first change, and then having the baby is the 2nd. Here's some more info for you:

You always have such great questions. you're helping me learn a lot lol

Sometimes there is a reason for it - being overwhelmed with all the changes, things to learn, the increased workload; in other cases, it's just hormones, the woman feels depressed even though she did want the baby and is glad to have it.

I bet that's so hard to deal with. I feel bad for people who have to deal with it!

Partners role in avoiding post partum depression is huge.. They have to take care that their better half is not overloaded with too much work and stress..

A lot of it has to do with hormone changes. My oldest daughter's father is no longer in the picture and she considers my husband now to be her dad. My ex-husband and had some major problems shortly after my daughter was born when he decided fatherhood was not for him. I had some MAJOR health issues after my daughter's birth and was physically unable to take care of my child or even myself. That paired with my relationship problems made me fall into deep depression. I loved my daughter more than anything but there were so many other painful things going on in my life at the time. It is hard to understand and something no woman should have to go through. I wish more women would be willing to get help before it is too late.
