Default Body becomes immune to products we use

I will never forget learning in Biology class in High School about how your body gets used to the products we use and they will no longer work on us. The example my teacher used was deodorant. Basically, if you use the exact same type of deodorant each day, over time, it will no longer work for you. He told us that it's good to mix things up here and there. Maybe have two kinds of deo around. Same goes for things like toothpaste, and meds.

My question is: then why are there people who are on medications their entire lives? How does that work? For example, I was on anti-depressants. If I would have stayed on them, how many times in my life would the dosage/type have to change?

Oh is that so? No wonder some medicines doesn't work on me esp pain relievers. Hmm but if we do change brands each and everytime we use it shouldn't that also ruin our body?

I've never thought of things that way. I've always thought this way about medicines and such, but never things that we put on externally. Is it always safe to go for something stronger that we aren't immune to?

Yes, I have noticed that - even with shampoos, if you keep using the same kind over and over again, it stops working. The body gets used to it. The same can happen with medications. My mom has been on a medication for about 7 years, and last year the doctor had determined that it stopped working for her, so she was switched to something else.

Actually, that doesn't apply to everything and I believe you meant ''antiperspirant'', because the main function of the deodorant is to make you smell good, this doesn't change over time. An antiperspirant basically blocks the sweat glands and prevents bad odors. Yes, the same antiperspirant might become less effective over time but products like toothpaste or deodorant do not stop working - just like medication, our system gets used to it and it is no longer as effective as it was the first time around.

Geez and I thought being loyal to a product that you use is a good thing to do. Now that these things occur I can't stick to just one product for a long time.
