I colour my hair and I get it done about every 6-8 weeks but would need to go less if it were not for my roots, I hate spending the money on getting the roots touched up and I wondered if there was a way I could do a DIY myself on the roots without having to go to a salon ?

How long is your hair? For shorter hair, I think you can do it yourself, at home, easily enough - just part the hair and work on the roots, following the directions given in the specific hair coloring kit. Longer hair can be treated at home as well, but it is a tough task.

It's really hard to cover your own roots because if you do it wrong the top of your head will end up looking like a bulls-eye. The problem is that the roots need a certain amount of time to process, the main part of the shaft needs a certain amount of time and the ends need a certain amount of time- and all these times are different! One thing that my sister who is a hair dresser suggests for someone who is trying to cover just a little grey, is to try some blonde highlights, they cover mask the grey and don't have to be done as often as a full color.

I always do it myself with hair color. They have these great root touch up kits now. They come with a comb and great directions. Be sure you always buy the same color and brand though. I would suggest coloring your entire head first- it will be hard to match the salon's color. Good luck and let us know how it comes out. |

I have hair just below my shoulder, I am afraid if I buy a box colour that it will be completely different than the colour in my hair. I have quite a build up of colour so not sure it would take on the ends, I might just see if I can get something nearest to the color and buy a hat just in case. |

I started going grey at an early age and have used just about everything. I have too much grey to use semi permanents now, I have found Belle Color to be the best dye. I use the shade called simply "Brown" lol as I don't really want auburn or anything. It covers perfectly, I use it every month to do my roots, and my hair is in good condition. I must say that I used Nice n Easy a few months ago when I couldn't get my usual dye, and my hair felt like straw, it was awful. Felt as though I had bleached my hair.

You can definitely do it yourself. I have grey roots too and can't stand them. Every other color, I just go and get the touch up kits and do the roots. My sytlist suggested this too. She said it is better for the hair to just touch up the roots every other time. |

hi, Wash your hair with one of the following rinses. Pour the selected rinse through your hair 15 times, re-rinsing with the same liquid. On the final rinse, wring hair, and leave for 15 minutes before rinsing with clear water. Covering Gray: Simmer 1/2 cup dried sage in 2 cups water for 30 minutes, then steep for several hours. Apply to hair and leave on until dried. Then rinse and dry. Repeat weekly, until desired shade, then monthly to maintain color. _____ zen |

My MIL does color her hair to cover up her grey hairs. She has this super long hair (up to her butt) so she has to maintain it. I recently saw my hubby having some grey hair but he refused to let me pluck it out. =))

Its always good to go to saloon, you will have no idea about how your hair root is. A good beautician or saloon will be able to find your problem and act accordingly. sometimes when you do it yourself, you may use excess amount of the coloring material and that chemical in the material may spoil you hair.

| I really think you could go pick up anything at your local store and dye the tips. If you don't like how it turns out, you can go to the salon. My mom was always dying her own hair and it's actually a lot easier than you'd think. If you're not sure.. have a friend help you. I've helped a few people dye their hair and it's easy, even if you've never done it before |
