How can someone with curly hair have a scene hair style with out cutting their hair?

I have used hair extentions put in by African hair stylists in the past. They were awesome as it was braided into my natural hair. They also stayed on pretty longtime; but it was very painful to remove them later on and I have lost a lot of my natural hair in the process. Now, if I want different styles and colors without having to cut my hair, I use wigs - they have come a long way in the past few years and they look completely natural.
