Has anyone here undergone the procedure? I know it may be a bit of a personal question, but it is something I am considering doing. I just wanted to know what happens, how the whole thing is done and how long the recovery time is. |

Its an operation in which fallopian tubes are cut or tied to stop the union of sperm and eggs. Its just another type of birth control method after which a female can not get pregnant or can not give birth. There are number of other birth controls available which you can think about because it is permanent, means you can not reverse back this process (in some cases you can reverse back but it is very expensive and chances are very less). Be advised that it can not even protect you against STD (sexually transmitting disease) |

It is a permanent procedure and some countries pose restrictions on who can and cannot have the operation done, such as age and if you have had any children already. I have a cousin who has the operation reversed and it made her quite ill for some time. Be sure that you want it done first. |

My mom did it and she's fine.

I would also prefer not to get pregnant, but even I think that is a bit extreme. No matter how I look at it, it's the word sterilization that gets to me. It sounds very wrong.

Female sterilization is offered for family planning. Once you have 1-2 kids it’s a social responsibility of the women to undergo this procedure in India. My mom did it & she is just fine. Select this procedure if you don't want to have children ever again. I can’t view this as a contraceptive method. |

I wanted to get my tubes tied...but then I did some research. There are often complications. And it's not a complete guarantee. Yes, you can get them untied. But that's a very difficult operation. In the States, most doctors will NOT do the procedure at all if the woman has not had at least two children and is over a certain age. The age varies from surgeon to surgeon, but mid-to-late-thirties seems to be the minimum.

There are some bad sides to this in the long run. I wouldn't do this at such early age it might cause something bad. My mom did this in her late 40's.
