I was considering planting an herb garden - I've always wanted one, and now, since I finally have some room, it seemed like a worthwhile endeavor. Is there really that much of a difference in the final taste of dishes made with fresh herbs as opposed to store-bought ones? What are the best ones to plant? Any tips or tricks... especially for keeping the rabbits and the squirrels out of it? |

Oh that sounds like a good idea. My dad had a veggie garden when I was little. Too bad he doesn't have any spare time to plant veggies anymore and also phil has been recently targeted with strong typhoons. My hubby is trying to grow his little onion just experimenting on stuffs but it's almost 3weeks and I still don't see any improvements haha.

I love green onions, we have been planting them outdoors and indoors, in winter. They are easy to grow, and there is so much you can do with them - add them into salads and all kinds of other dishes, fry them, even eat them raw with some salt and bread. |

Yeah I do like to slice up green onions but we also have some violet onions here which makes me cry while slicing them up. ) It's so funny how this small spice could do such damage haha.

My little girl planted some basil seeds last week and they are already showing through. Fresh herbs are so much better than the dried stuff, you can really taste the flavours and they are a great enhancement to your meals. My favorite herb is oregano you can use it in almost anything. |

I want to plant some mint, does anyone know how to do it and whether it will grow indoors? We used to have some in the garden, and it comes back every spring, so you don't have to worry about re-planting. I'm not sure about growing it in the house though.

What kind of herbs were you thinking of growing? If I were to grow something, I would like mint, basil, and something else. How fragrant are herbs when they're growing?

I would say that the herbs that you buy from stores and what you get from your garden would taste the same, however, if you want a stronger aroma and a more fresh flavor to your meal, it would be better getting it straight from the roots. You can't beat the benefits from getting it fresh. The green onions would be an easy care, basil is useful for many dishes, and mint gives a nice twist to your cooking. If you were to grow it in your garden, it's best that you put a fence around it with perhaps a plastic roofing to keep the small rodents away, just like a mini green house. Overall, it's good and advantageous to grow your own herbs, you know how it was taken cared of. Have you tried consulting with other expert neighbors who plant herbs or gardeners for tips? |
