Default Microwave cooking safety

I don’t know how many of you have wondered about this. But I used to be quite worried about using the microwave because I have come across so many studies that say microwaving alters the molecular structure of the food stuff and that it isn’t good for us .The literature on the subject as far as I could determine is not conclusive with many studies as saying that microwaves are safe and harmless and pose no health hazard, whereas as some other studies point to cancer causing molecular changes and such when food is cooked using the microwave.

Most of us cannot eliminate the use of microwave from our lives today, what do we do when it’s winter and we really have to heat up food even if only 10 minutes after cooking it, or when we have to heat up precooked food when back from work. One of the best ways to minimize the health hazard associated with using the microwave is to keep a distance from it while it is working. I used to try and not use the microwave at all but now I use it once in a while. One of the things that keep worrying me is, what are the vessels that are safe to be used in it. I know metals are not safe to be used but I get confused over plastic, paper and glass.

Do you guys worry about using microwave to cook? What kind of vessels do you use only microwave safe certified vessels or do you decide on your own?

Once I was watching this movie 1408* and incidental I was in a hotel room. I had forgotten that I had kept eggs to boil in microwave. The egg exploded with a huge sound leaving the oven doors bang open. I have never watched a horror movie after that.

i have heard about those studies too. Scary thing is, all I ever eat is stuff that's been microwaved. Hopefully our bodies get used to it. That would be sad if we all ended up with cancer.

It has not been proved conclusively that microwaves will cause cancer. Everyday we use mobile phones. Even that could be harmful. As long as the exposure is within limits, there should be no cause for concern. However it is better to use glass or ceramic containers especially for heating fat containing food like milk etc., Certain plastics are unsafe to use as they may affect the quality of food. actually vitamin loss is minimized in microwave heating compared to heating on a flame.

It should be ok as long as you are not sitting inside the microwave.

True haha. My mom always told me that it's bad to stand right in front of it, but I dunno... seems like one of those things that people say but don't know anything about. Kinda like sitting to close to the TV :P

By the time they prove what all are harmful and at what degree, it will be already too late.

That's a scary and good point. We are so smart, but do things that harm us without even knowing...

Haha, me either. My little sister can fit in tiny spaces, I would laugh if I opened it up and there she was, smiling :P

I kinda skimmed and read the list of things and that's pretty scary. Sadly though, all my food is eaten from the microwave and I'm not willing to change that. I feel it's too late.. lol.

That's true. I wouldn't know what else to eat though. Do you think canned food is just as bad?

I bet it is. I asked my bf yesterday if we could set a day aside, look up a recipe and make something from scratch. I'm sure we can do it
