Default Eye Care for Computer Users

Me being a student and an avid net surfer I work on the computer on a regular basis. But there is a big disadvantage on using the computer for prolonged hours and majority of the day. Your eyes get strained a lot and they require some rest in between, so whenever I am on the computer i make sure that i take a break from the computer every half an hour, even if its just walking around, going to the loo.
I also wash my eyes with cold water when i have been on the computer for more than 2 hours, which makes your eyes more refreshed.
Simple eye exercises also make a big differences, like moving your eye balls round in a circle 2-3 days in a day!

Do try these small tricks, you will find a difference and wont feel the strain on your eyes!

one more important trick to reduce the eye strain wile working on computer is to look here and there in between while you are working and do not concentrate on the screen for very long .

You could also reduce the brightness of the screen and buy one of those monitor covers that reduces the glare.

I found that glare from the computer monitor was a problem too.

I have a gel eye mask that I use on a night. You leave it in the fridge to cool and lay it accross your eyes when you are in bed. It's very soothing to the eye area, almost like using cucumber.

I use a protection screen in my monitor to prevent the direct glare form the computer. I also take regular breaks to relax my eyes.

I have never heard of this. I thought washing my eyes with cold water is bad.

Anyway, I use my computer more than 10 hours a day and I bought a screen protector like bammer. I already have a bad eyesight, I don't want to make it worse.

All the suggestions mentioned above like taking regular breaks, rolling the eyes for exercise and also watching your eyes with cold water are a must.
Another important point to note is that you have enough lighting in the room and the brightness of the computer screen is adjusted.

@ Blingbling - The reason that your eyes require a cold water wash/splash is so that it can easily relax your eyes and soothe them. I have not heard of washing the eyes when they open, but instead washing them when they are closed, so that the water goes on the eye lids, which wont do any harm to the eyes.

- Best option would be to use LCD monitor.

- I use a software called "Dimscreen" to reduce brightness by 90% while browsing at night.

- Its advised to focus on a distant object, every 15-30 min as per your comfort level.

- A correct posture is necessary as in case of watching TV.

- If you tend to get lost while browsing , use softwares like "Repetetive Strain Injury Shield"

- And finally for the lazy people ....

PS: Harpreet, why can't I embed the image directly , instead of having to display a thumbnail ?

I am in front of computer for atleast more than 10 hours, While working I make sure to blink my eyes at regular intervals , this also reduces the strain to certain extent and rolling eyes exercise is also beneficial.

These are all great tips. I couldn't stand being in front of the computer for 10 hours a day! I get on and off threwout the day so my eyes get breaks.

I have heard that alternating between looking far into the distance and then looking at a close object is a good exercise for the eyes. Also, looking at green grass and tree leaves is relaxing. Sometimes I take a break, go out to the deck and just sit there, letting my eyes relax by admiring the nature.

Yes you are right bammer. I too have screen protection for my monitor which avoid strain to my eyes.

Also, have a glass of carrot juice daily which is rich in vitamin A. Try this? Really good for eyes.

I take short breaks, and advantage on me because my room gets a view with trees, green leaves of the trees are so soothing for my eyes. Better take care of ones eyes than suffering from blindness.

Thanks Trizi for saying that an LCD monitor is best to use.
I won't have to worry about eye strain now.

All the above mentioned measures are true, the other thing is the surrounding lighting should be dominated from computer brightness, to make it dim and get adjusted to normal vision.

I could use computer for nearly 5 hours a day. I will take break frequently and splash water on my face at times. This helps to give rest to my eyes. I have tried keeping potato slice on my eyes too to cool my eyes.

I used to wear my eyeglasses every time I'm doing some computer works. Do you think its a good advise to wash your eyes after facing a computer?

Nice tips, everyone. I spend most of my time on the computer, and I know that I need to do something for my eyesight, but I just don't know what. These will definitely help me out a lot!

Do not work on a computer for long time at a stretch. Take a short breaks in between. Take a stroll outside in the fresh air for a few minutes. Observe greenery and relaxing to eyes. Wash your eyes often with cold water.

I really dont think you should wash you eyes right after using the computer. You should give it a minute before rinsing it because it's tired.
