Default 10 yr old exercising

My 10 yr old daughter is a bigger girl. She is not at all fat, but very solid. She looks bigger than all of the other girls her age and it is starting to bother her.

Right now she plays basketball twice a week and does the wii every day. She wants to start running for exercise. (Her brother is big into track). Is she too young to start running or will this be a good form of exercise for her?

I think that's fine. It will also be very good for her, because she'll get in the habit of exercising, so when she's older it will be something she'll do without thinking twice. I think that's a great idea. Good for her!

I don't think it will harm your daughter at all. As a parent I understand your concern, but it is good to have healthy active children. I know I would rather my kids were out doing sports than sitting infront of the TV.

That's true. You want to remember to tell her it's okay to stop. You don't want her getting obsessed with it and forgetting to eat and things like that. She will need rest, especially a lot at first!

They used to make us run at school all the time, starting from the first grade. I don't think it would harm a child, but she needs to know when to stop. When she is out of breath or starting to hurt, tell her to take a break and not push herself.

I always hated PE. Running wasn't too bad, cuz I'd rather do that than play a sport, but still.. I hated how they timed us. I was always towards the back. Doing something physical just isn't my thing.

We have decided that this is something we are going to do together. We are going to go to the indoor track this week. This way we will both get the exercise and I can make sure she isn't obsessing about it.
