Default Is it safe to take weight loss pills when we are pregnant?

Pregnancy is one of the most crucial phases of womanhood. We can even say that womanhood comes to its completion or fulfillment when a woman is pregnant. During such an important phase of life your should take extra precautions to ensure that you and your baby is safe. You should avoid all possible medication that can turnout to be risky for the baby. Even doctors do not prescribe any medication unnecessarily. They will prescribe medication only when it is absolutely necessary because the medication that we take can interfere with the growth of the baby. It is our responsible to be careful during pregnancy.

Today, all of us are highly fashion conscious. All of us want to look good and fashionable. We would like to look slim and wear fashionable clothes that will suit us well. We cannot wear fashionable clothes if we are fat. So we spend a lot of time and money in losing weight. We workout regularly to shed those extra kilos from our thighs, arms and belly. It is good to maintain a slim body but we need to pay attention to the methods that we are using to remain slim. Some of us who cannot stick to a strict diet program try to seek easier or faster methods like taking diet pills. There are different types of diet pills. Some of the diet pills will suppress our hunger while the others will not allow fat to settle in our body. Whether it is hunger suppressant or fat burner, these are artificial methods and they interfere with the natural processes of our body to a great extent. Taking such weight loss pills is not good for our health on the long run while they can show enticing results.

In particular, when we are pregnant we should never take such pills because they will affect the growth of the baby. Pregnancy is not the right time to work on our weight. Our baby’s health is more important than our appearance. In general, women will gain weight during pregnancy, which is normal. In 90% of the situations, the weight gained during pregnancy will be lost after the delivery of the child. Even if we fail to lose our weight after childbirth, we can start working on our weight at a later stage. We should give priority to our baby; so if the baby is still suckling we must make sure that we secrete enough milk for the baby. Going on a diet program will affect the milk secretion after childbirth. So you must listen to your doctor’s advice to ensure that you secrete enough milk for your baby. Doctors advice that for the first six months the baby should not be fed with anything else but mother’s milk. Therefore, it is your responsibility as a mother to take care of your health so that your baby gets its feed. Do away with all weight loss pills when you are pregnant and when your baby is still suckling.

I agree that we should not take slimming tablets while pregnant, so much crosses the placenta and can cause so much damage to the baby. I do wonder why people feel it necessary to loose weight while pregnant, ok understandably afterwards but not during. I was on hypertension tablets while pregnant and hated taking them but had to for my own safety and was told they don't cross the placenta but they did and I ended up delivering early and my baby was very underweight. It's just not worth any risks taking any sorts of tablets.

No, it is not safe to take weight loss pills during pregenency. Better avoid feeding period also.

Moreover we should not take any tablets(even vitamin and mineral tablets) without consulting a gynecologist.

I think the majority of weight loss pills are not safe, period, even if you are not pregnant. And I certainly agree that a pregnant woman shouldn't touch them. Stayng slim is not possible, your belly will grow, it is a part of being pregnant; however, you can stay fit and in shape by doing some carefully chosen exercises.

Slimming pills are avoided during pregnancy as they retards the growth of the foetus physically as well as mentally.

Taking slimming pills are definitely NOT advisable during pregnancy. They contain chemicals which thwart the growth of the fetus as well as affect the fetal heart rate. No doctor would allow a woman to take slimming pills during pregnancy.
