Our food contains carbohydrates in three forms: Sugar, starches and fibre. 1) Sugar All sugars have a sweet taste. The chief source of sugars in India is white or cane sugar, gur or jaggery, honey fruits (fresh and dry). Sugars are of two types, simple and complex. 2) Starches Starches on their own are insipid or tasteless and have to be broken down and digested elaborately before they get absorbed. 3) Fibre Fibre is present in plant foods and cannot be digested by the human body, as it is made up of complex carbohydrates. Although fibre is not a source of energy, its role in disease prevention is outstanding. Foods of animal source (eggs, meat, milk) do not contain any fibre |

I think the general rule of thumb is that if it is white, then it's a carbohydrate. Potatoes, crackers, white bread, bananas and pasta are all white and are all a form of carbohydrate. |
