Default Short Stories

Someone recently remarked that the short story is dead. Do you think that's true? Which do you prefer, short stories or novels? I prefer the novel, too, but I will read a short story if it's interesting enough.

I like to read short stories every once in a while. I think it's nice to be able to start and finish a story in one sitting. I find it hard to create time to finish an entire novel, hence why I'm still working on finishing the last Twilight book. I just never have the time.

I used to write a lot of short stories in High School. I find it a lot easier to write short stories than long ones. I start to run out of ideas and then never finish lol

I do see the appeal in reading a story and finishing it all in one sitting. I wonder why they aren't as popular since we do live in an impatient culture now. Still, the novel always seems to win in a contest between the two. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that short stories aren't published in newspapers and magazines like they used to be.

I have never been really interested in short stories. I used to read the Reader's Digest condensed books that had the short stories once in a while but I realized that they were really not something I could appreciate. I like intricate details and plots that keep multiplying and novels are the best ones to find them in.

Short stories can be inconsistent in quality. One high-quality short story does not guarantee the quality of the next short story even if it's written by the same author. Readers want something that will last a bit longer than a few pages.

I like short stories. One of the reasons why they may not be as popular is because it is not profitable to publish a short story outside of a medium such as a magazine. Childrens' books are mostly short stories and they do sell.

As a writer, it's hard to make a profit off short stories unless you're very well-known. You can still sell your short stories, but chances are, you'll only be able to sell to smaller publications. I'm glad that someone is still trying to keep the short story alive.
