Default Can't Afford a Pet

What do you think is a good substitute for a pet if a family can't afford a more traditional one like a dog or a cat? Do you think that a fish would make a good substitute?

It depends on whether you like having a fish or not. To me, it would not be a good replacement because I like to interact with my pets, see their emotions and love. I don't think fish and reptiles show that much emotion, so I've never wanted one as a pet.

Many people pick guinea pigs or even hamsters. You can still interact with them, they are soft, and they aren't too small. It really depends on what you like. Doo you want to be able to pet? Or just a creature that is fairly active so you can watch it?

Oh I fish is fine, at least you don't have to cuddle them everytime. My hubby likes them because he thinks watching fishes swim makes him feel at peace.

Well, if you can't afford a pet and if you are not against inanimate things, try having a teddy bear . You can cuddle it just like a dog or cat and there are no risks involved as well

I would definitely get a gold fish. They can survive in a regular bowl with tap water. No need for a huge aquariam or filters. They are pretty inexpensive to keep.

Yes, I think fish or turtles would be a good idea. They are both easy to maintain and do not require expensive food or care from the veterinarian. But you must like them to keep them around as they are both quite passive and boring species.

If you don't want to have to take care of real fish, you could play FishVille on Facebook It's really relaxing.

Watching fish swim around can be very relaxing, and I'm am glad that they don't need as much time and attention as more traditional pets. Are gold fish cheap? How long do they live for?

This thread shows how different people have different personalities. Some of us would like a fish tank because you don't have to cuddle the fish! And to me, not being able to cuddle and play with a pet is a disadvantage. I do agree that looking at a fish tank is pleasant and relaxing though.

@Lissy
You're right! We are all very different. I also like something that I can cuddle with and pet. Fish just aren't the same..
