Default Things to consider before getting a pet

What kinds of things do you think a person should consider before getting a pet? There are far too many stray animals that nobody wants. If people put more thought into the process, maybe there would be fewer homeless animals.

I believe that stray pet problem is mostly due to people's irresponsible behaviors. Some people just buy pets on a whim, some get them as a gift while they have no intention to own one and there are also others who, in a time of solitude, think that a pet would help keep them company, but as soon as they find someone, they no longer want to keep their pets. There are also people who let their pets out without having them spayed or neutered, which of course creates a huge problem of more unwanted animals.
I think that the best solution is to be absolutely sure that one wants to own a pet, and can actually take care of it. Once it is adopted, they should also have them spayed or neutered to avoid ''accidents''. I feel horrible for those poor, helpless animals who are being abandoned everyday without any consideration.

I completely agree with ButterflyEs. Irresponsibility is the key. In most cases, people who make a decision to get a pet easily, will just as easily let the pet go, for whatever reason. "It's harder to take care of than I thought." "The vet bill was too much." "I don't think I actually want this pet anymore." The list goes on and on, and rather than at least taking the unwanted pet to a shelter, people just kick them out the door. That's plain wicked, if you ask me.

Look at prices for items you will need like: food, toys, beds, etc. Make sure you have extra cash for shots, or any kind of emergency with your pet. Where are they going to stay? What will you do with them while you're at work? If you have children, will they play well with them? Those are the first things I think of

That's true. Having pets is quite expensive, especially if they get sick. Regular shots are also costly. It's important to be certain that we can afford all these necessities before getting a pet.

I would also say this: decide who will take care of the new pet. Will that be you? Will that be both you and your spouse? Will that be your child? What happens if the child promises to take care of the animal but then fails to do it (as they often do)?
