Default Does it help a car to put it in neutral when you stop?

I know a few people who are conviced that it's good to put the car in neutral whenever stopped at a red light. How true is that? I think it's weird and seems like a waste of time..

Actually its a good practice that you put the car in neutral unless you are in a car racing. It's one of safety measures to prevent car accidents.

Huh.. so basically, it's making sure that when you start going again, you don't go in reverse on accident or something?

Only if you are driving a stick shift. For automatics, you leave the car
on drive and your foot on the brake.

Default Driving

It is always better to be in neutral at the traffic lights no matter what the transmission. In fact if you have auto, it can be better to be in neutral if your car hasn't been serviced and the tick over is running fast as this will put a strain on your transmission.

Yes, for automatic transmission, you can just put it on drive position. For manual transmission, you need to put it on neutral so your clutch life is longer.

I don't think it makes that much of a difference in clutch life.

Its good to put your car in neutral because your car will have low RPM at that time., so fuel can be saved

because for an automatic car, when you are stopped at a red
light you don't have to pop it into neutral, you just keep
the brake pressed.
