Default Best Age to Adopt

At what age do you think it's best to adopt a child? I would rather adopt a child when it's a baby. If you get a child that's a little older, it could have several significant psychological problems that you'll have to deal with.

A baby may be easiest because they don't have all the baggage, like you said. However, if you're ready to deal with all the emotional issues, then I think it would really mean a lot to an older child, b/c they really need someone to help them through all the things they've experienced.

I would say the younger, the better - easier to deal with. The older they get, the more difficult it will be to re-train them or teach basic manners, as it was in the case of a family we know. They took a child from an orphanage somewhere overseas, that child did not know how to use a fork - and was not willing to learn, either.

Very true...some are so hard headed. And I think, if you adopt an infant the processing of the documents will be much easier especially if you are direct to the biological parents or relatives.

If you are willing to take a child into your home and bring it up as your own, then age should not matter. Of course having a baby would probably be easier for the new parent, but there are children of all ages, all over the world who need loving, caring homes.

I don't believe the age should matter when it comes to adopting a child. The ultimate goal is to help and love a human being after all. But since all of us have certain preferences, I guess it applies to adopting as well.

I believe that you should adopt because you love a child, but I think that can become much more difficult if the child is older and has a traumatic past. How do you teach an older child to treat you with love and respect if you're not really their parent, and they know it?
